Headway with Avalon Emerson
After a wee break, we’re back with the immensely talented and in-demand Avalon Emerson!
Avalon Emerson is from the desert. While she currently lives in Berlin, the music she produces comes from the dreamlike expanse and abstract textures of the Sonoran landscapes of Arizona. Her journey has taken her from that sunbaked state to the contemporary dance music mecca via a long stint in San Francisco, where she cut her teeth as a DJ in the city’s storied warehouse party scene. In her DJ sets and productions now, she offers a timeless narrative that reflects a passion for the sound design of new wave, the futurism of techno, the soul of American house and the exuberance of rave. Though she’s built up steam in 2015 from multiple sets at Panorama Bar, and globetrotting all around Europe and North America, she’s just getting started, and continues to outdo herself with original productions released on Whities, Shtum, Spring Theory, and Icee Hot, and her own DJ tool edit pool, the Cybernedits series.

Headway 14th Birthday with Dr. Rubinstein
For our 14th Birthday (!), we’re delighted to announce a DJ who’s already smashed it at our sister night Missing Persons Club @ La Cheetah, Glasgow last May, and has since gone on to play Maximum Pressure @ SWG3 – Dr. Rubinstein!
Marina Rubinstein loves to DJ, but even when she’s perched in the booth, weaving together an invigorating assortment of hypnotic acid, ’90s rave and pumping techno, her mind is on the dancefloor. After all, it was on dancefloor that this Russian-born, Israeli-reared artist fell in love with techno in the first place. Long before she started playing records and adopted the Dr. Rubinstein moniker, she was a self-declared “true raver” in Tel Aviv, and it was during those long nights of partying that she eventually came to see dancing as a kind of meditation. “When the music is right,” she explains, “you can free your mind and just dance without thinking of anything. For me, it’s the best feeling in life, something that brings absolute happiness.”
That “special feeling,” as she describes it, is something Rubinstein is constantly seeking, not just for herself, but also for those who come to see her play. While her ceaselessly cheery personality certainly goes a long way in this effort, it’s her adventurous spirit – not to mention her unabashed love of all things acid – that truly sets her apart as a DJ. Now based in Berlin, she’s become a regular at places like ://about blank and Berghain, but her talents have increasingly taken her around Europe and the globe to spin alongside a wide array of techno luminaries.

Headway with Leon Vynehall (3 hour set)
Leon Vynehall has already proved himself to be that rare thing – an artist with his own agenda rather than a producer aping the sound of the day. To date his off kilter sounds have come in the form of EPs on labels like 3024, Rush Hour and Running Back, and have been carefully crafted things, layered with musicality whilst never straying too far from a infectious groove.
Taking obvious foundations from house, techno, disco, funk, hip-hop and soul, Vynehall’s music incorporates many elements from his musical past too: his journey began with playing drums and the piano in bands as a teenager – which manifests itself in the raw, live sound he strives for in his productions – while much of his spare time is spent listening to anything from classical and orchestral compositions to post-punk. His work has seen him dabble in tempos, palettes and styles, but all the time managing to keep his songs coherently ‘Vynehall’.
“I like chords, I like atmosphere and some sort of emotion in music. Rather than it being just about the dance floor, I like it being a bit of both. I like to take a sound and change it, manipulating things so they sound a bit dusty. With drums, I like to make them sound more human. I prefer dance music that isn’t quantized, regimented, and super mixed down to the nano-perfect spot. I’m a believer in the fact that music doesn’t have to sound professional to sound great. Mastering engineers hate me.”
His 2014 release, ‘Music For The Uninvited’, was a turning point in his career. Resident Advisor scored the EP a 4.5 out of five, calling it “one of the most eclectic and rewarding house records you’ll hear all year”. Clash wrote that, “If this is what being uninvited is like, we’re totally cool with missing the party”, while The Washington Post said that it “couldn’t be much more of a delight”. It went on to gain end of year accolades from publications as wide ranging as Pitchfork, NPR and Gorilla vs. Bear, and saw Vynehall begin a relentless touring schedule that has taken him from Berlin’s Panorama Bar and Ibiza’s DC-10 to festival stages as far afield as Los Angeles, Sydney and Tokyo.
‘Rojus’ – the 2016 follow up to ‘Music For The Uninvited’ – was equally acclaimed, being named ‘Best New Music’ by Pitchfork, ‘Best Album’ at the DJ Mag Awards, and lauded by the likes of Mixmag, Billboard and Mojo.
Vynehall’s DJ style is eclectic, considered and always surprising, and has been expertly reflected in his popular mixes for the likes of FACT and XLR8R, with the latter commenting that his contribution to their podcast series “quite possibly raised more questions than it answered”. His debut Radio 1 Essential Mix proved so popular that it went on to be shortlisted by the BBC as one of the 5 best Essential Mixes of 2016.
Something of a media recluse, all we really know about Leon Vynehall is from his music – so far it’s proved a fascinating story.

** DVS1 POSTPONED, RESIDENTS ALL NIGHT **
We are gutted to announce, after everything looking so positive this morning, DVS1’s flights have now been cancelled so we are going to have to postpone his set tonight.
Although the conditions in Scotland are getting better, the weather in London has deteriorated and it’s his flights into and out of here that have been cancelled.
Anyone who bought a ticket will be entitled to a refund, or hang on to it until we find a new date for DVS1.
We are still running Headway this evening however, all DVS1 ticket holders will be admitted free entry until 11.30pm, then £5 for all thereafter.
We’ll be playing plenty techno tonight so get yourself down for a bounce!
Headway with DVS1 (3 hour set)
We’re delighted to announce that we’ve finally managed to bring someone we’ve been after for many years to Dundee for the first time, one of the best techno DJs around – DVS1!
We are also pleased to host the official warm-up tour for the eagerly anticipated Terminal V Easter Festival which will be taking place on Sunday 1st of April at the Royal Highland Centre in Edinburgh. This year’s line-up will feature some of the biggest techno acts around just now such as Rødhåd, Pan-Pot, Amelie Lens, Helena Hauff and more.
Immersed in the heydays of the ’90s Midwest rave scene, DVS1 (Zak Khutoretsky) has gained a highly respected reputation for his versatile skills, infectious energy and physical power behind the decks…
As a resident DJ of Berlin’s infamous Berghain / Panorama Bar, he moves floors of the world’s most prestigious and best venues crafting the art of DJing through always being in the mix, pushing his own boundaries and sensitively reacting to the people’s energy. Molded by massive sound systems composed of walls of speakers, DVS1’s vision of techno is based on the physical power of music. Zak’s pure approach of sound being his personal channel to capture the very moment in time is as dedicated as his continuation to shape the electronic scene in his hometown Minneapolis – from throwing illegal warehouse parties to owning a nightclub to running his own sound company for two decades.
After his first original releases on Klockworks and Transmat, he was not only introduced to a bigger audience, hence creating a strong fellowship for his own imprints: While HUSH showcase DVS1’s love for deep, purist techno and only his music, Mistress Recordings reflects his wide range as a beat and rhythm addict presenting some of his secret weapons that touches all corners of the dance floor and beyond. With a combination of deep musical knowledge, unparalleled enthusiasm, and a vinyl collection of more than 30,000 records, DVS1 is also renowned as an outspoken defender of underground’s true values that established the American DJ, producer and label owner as a truly exceptional character of today’s contemporary electronic music scene.

Headway & RRP with Daniel Avery
Headway and Reading Rooms Productions are excited to welcome back Daniel Avery!
It will be nearly 2 years since he blew us away with what we can only describe as a masterclass, when Daniel played all night long at his last trip to The Reading Rooms.
That kicked off a number of ‘All Night Long’ events for us, with Joy Orbison and Artwork also taking up the mantle since then, and I’m sure you can agree, these nights have all been special.
We’re especially buzzing then that Daniel Avery has agreed once again to play all night long for your listening pleasure, and if you were lucky enough to get a ticket last time before it sold out, you’ll know how good this is going to be so don’t miss it!

“Electronic music is unique in that, whilst it has an immediate effect on the body, the culture surrounding it has the ability to run deep into your life. Whenever I’m in a club, I want to give myself up to music. This is the very thing that excites me the most. Witnessing a DJ create an atmosphere in a room from the ground up takes patience and effort from everyone present but when the pivotal moments hit, your watch stops ticking.”
It is this thinking which motivated and inspired the making of Daniel Avery’s entry into the treasured DJ-Kicks series. Across its 78 minutes the mix creates a hypnotic space focusing on “music by some like-minded souls” from the outer reaches of techno. It is a mix concerned with the idea of taking a collective breath and allowing records their own space.
“The music that always hits hardest is what I’d consider to be unreal, something that sounds like it comes from another place entirely and moves at its own pace. I want to create those moments where opening your eyes on a dance floor becomes difficult. When the outside world is nothing more than a distant thought.”
The mix also features three new original Avery productions including a track from Rote, a project with BleeD boss Volte-Face. It follows three years’ worth of studio experimentation in-between a life spent on the road touring the enormous success of debut record, Drone Logic. Released on Erol Alkan’s wildly psychedelic Phantasy label, reviews were unanimous in praise: “A mesmerising debut” (Mixmag); “In a league of its own” (NME); “Exceptional” (The Times); “One of the finest techno albums of the year” (The Quietus); “Underground dance music with this much ambition hasn’t been heard in quite a while” (Resident Advisor); “Avery owns this space” (Pitchfork); “A benchmark for so many other dance albums to aspire to” (Dummy).
Its success was furthered by the fact that Drone Logic didn’t really fit expected templates of what a dance record today should sound like. There are no set piece vocals; when voices emerge on tracks, they are invariably disembodied, odd. And as distortion whips across techno-based backing tracks, it splices modern club music with the kind of sounds that forward thinking guitar bands might conjure up. The result was a wholly compelling, gloriously transcendent album and one that continues to strike a chord with new listeners.
Coming off the back of 2012’s much-lauded FABRICLIVE 66 compilation, many of Drone Logic’s early demos were first tested at the London clubbing institution. Whilst Avery claims that his music is affected by every stop on a relentless tour schedule, one that has cemented his position in Resident Advisor’s “Top DJs” poll for several years straight, his debut was a record very much conceived in fabric. It seemed natural, therefore, for his residency to be taken one step further with Divided Love, “a semi regular gathering and a chance to present acts who are doing something special; music for the mind…”
The night, now expanded across Europe and beyond, has already played host to the likes of DJ Nobu, Helena Hauff, Voices From The Lake, Xosar, Kassem Mosse, Dopplereffekt, Answer Code Request, Lee Gamble, Voiski, Factory Floor and Objekt to name a small handful. Furthermore, a distinct line can be drawn between Divided Love and the double album of carefully curated remixes that followed Drone Logic: New Energy. Featuring reworks from Rødhåd to Powell, Silent Servant to Roman Flügel, Perc to Beyond The Wizard’s Sleeve, it stands with the DJ-Kicks CD as yet another testament to the strength of the current state of affairs in underground electronic music, borne out of one of its most original talents.

Headway with Jeremy Underground
We’re delighted to announce that we have finally booked one of our favourite DJs of the last 18 months or so – Jeremy Underground!
We first caught Jeremy at the Secretsundaze Off-Sonar party in Barcelona 2015 and were blown away. When we saw him again later in the year at Dimensions for THAT closing set with Motor City Drum Ensemble, we knew we had to bring him to The Reading Rooms.
A selector whose crates run deeper than most, Jeremy Underground’s gift for digging has seen him regularly spin at many a historic venue across the globe. With an unbridled passion for what he does, his faultless selection and enthusiasm never fails to lift the dance floor.
Having seen Jeremy again recently at the Sub Club, this is one we’re particularly excited about, and we can’t wait to welcome him to Headway for his Dundee debut!

Born in 1986 in a parisian suburb, Jeremy is a passionate record collector and music lover who’s collection and knowledge of deep house surpasses his years of collecting it. Falling madly in love with Deep House in 1997 thanks to Radio Nova in Paris, he spent his formative teenage years in record shops with a sole idea in mind: unearthing all the hidden treasures of House music, leaving no stone unturned. Then, later on getting into the same process with other musical styles such as Jazz, Soul, Funk…
Jeremy started “My Love Is Underground” in 2010, a vinyl-only label dedicated to his first love: the authentic New York/New Jersey house sound. His mission was to bring these warm vibes back and showcase the spirit of this golden era in house. Bringing up 5 years in the game in 2015, the label will celebrate with a run of special parties that will bring in the next stage in MLIU’s evolution. Regarded as a fine selector with a strong musical identity, Jeremy now carries his heavy bag of records across the world, spreading his love for underground music. The MLIU label parties are fast becoming the talk of any city that hosts them, with music lovers traveling from country to country to experience the MLIU vibe.
His honesty and dedication towards music has rocket launched him to the world of international DJing, with the now extremely rare feature of being a DJ only and not a Producer/DJ. The label has gone from strength to strength, including a landmark debut compilation in 2014, the stunning “My Love Is Underground” 3xLP featuring Jeremy’s hand picked selection of rare & out of press House jams from years gone by. A real defining moment in his burgeoning career, it was ranked by Resident Advisor #1 best compilation of the year, winning praise from DJ’s and collectors alike for the depth and raw quality of the selection. His sets share similar class, burning up dance floors wherever he goes & you can be sure that the flag for ‘hard core deep house’ will be flying high for years to come.
