Next up we are excited to bring Nonplus+ label boss Boddika to Headway for his Dundee debut!
With electronic music becoming more polished and quantized, Boddika’s hard hitting analogue sound has shaken the scene to its very core, slamming down with a raw take on things that’s making all who hear it take note. Harking the expansive sounds of Luke Vibert, the analogue programming of Juan Atkins early work, and the rawness of the Drexciya/Dopplereffekt family.
If you’ve caught Boddika at Pressure last year, at the Sub Club earlier this year when he literally brought part of the roof down, or even as recently as at Dimensions festival in Croatia last week, then you’ll know that his raw techno sound will go down perfectly at The Reading Rooms and we can’t wait!

Electro? Techno? Old? New? Al Green has a habit of both reinventing himself and pushing boundaries. As one half of Instra:mental he helped develop a diverse and unique sound that crossed a range of styles and tempos within the drum and bass / electronica sphere. Now as Boddika he has created a raw, energetic and driving persona that instantly garnered support from DJ’s as varied as Skream, Loefah, Dixon, Tale of Us, Cosmin TRG, DJ Stingray, Martyn, Pearson Sound, Ben UFO, Ryan Elliot, Joy Orbison, Scuba and Deetron.
Boddika is inspired by Machine Music and influenced by a range of genres from old school hip hop and electro to Chicago house and Detroit techno and even taking in a bit of 80’s / 90’s dance. To say Green’s influences are varied would be an understatement and that certainly shows in his current productions: in his own words “I just do what I feel like doing when I’m in the studio, and that’s where the music comes from”. In short: it sounds like absolutely nothing else.
As well as solo production Green is also now the sole owner at NonPlus – releasing artists such as Kassem Mosse, Skudge, Martyn, Basic Sole Unit, Endian and most recently Radio Slave as well as solo Boddika material. He is also the co owner alongside long term collaborator Joy Orbison of Sunklo where the duo have released four of their joint works to great acclaim. The labels and collaborations are yet more strings to his bow and mean that Green as Boddika wont be disappearing any time soon.
After many years of trying, we have finally managed to grab Bicep for a date in-between their recently announced 13 week residency at one of London’s most well-respected clubs, XOYO, following in the footsteps of Skream, Jackmaster, Eats Everything and others.
The Belfast duo have been known to play lost and forgotten disco / Chicago house / Detroit techno / Italo edits and everything in-between during their sets, and having been voted as high as 28th in the Resident Advisor Top 100 DJ Poll in recent years as well as recording their first Radio 1 Essential Mix, we can’t wait for their Dundee debut at Headway!

London based, Belfast-born blogger-production-dj duo Matt McBriar and Andy Ferguson need little by way of introduction. Their ‘Feel My Bicep blog” is the go-to place for tastemakers world-wide for lost and forgotten disco / Chicago house / Detroit techno / Italo edits and everything in-between. On a production tip, they have released on such labels as Throne Of Blood, Traveller Records, Mystery Meat and 2012 saw their critically acclaimed track $tripper get released on Love Fever hitting the top chart spots on Juno and selling out worldwide. Their remix track record has also been excellent with them stamping their distinguished sound upon works from Blondes, Toby Tobias, Disclosure, Blood Orange, Cosmic Kids and many more for labels such as Domino, Wolf Music and Tusk. Will Saul then snapped them up for his label Aus, with a collaborative EP including tracks “You” and “Don’t” which once again hit number one on Juno and caused the Beatport charts some bother. The Feel My Bicep label launched in September 2012 with the highly sought after“Vision Of Love.”It received great press worldwide and once again sold out whilst hitting the top spot at the stores. Room hosts at Fabric, a residency at We Love in Ibiza and bookings at Manchester’s Warehouse Project then ensued, with 2012 ending very nicely for the duo who came in at 32 on the Resident Advisor End Of Year DJ Poll.
2013 saw Bicep tour globally, including dates in North & South America, Australia, Asia and Dubai, with an especially busy summer, packed full of festivals. Between gigs, Bicep were hard at work in the studio and had a string of successful releases beginning with Stash on Aus, followed by a collaboration with production heavy hitters Simian Mobile Disco, and the result was Sacrifice released on SMD’s own Delicacies label. The track proved to be another success and was undoubtedly the work of two duos at the top of their production games. After Sacrifice came the three track release Satisfy, the second release on Feel My Bicep records. Like the first release on the Feel My Bicep label, FMB002 provided to be a huge hit, gaining radio and DJ support world wide as well as selling out. Bicep also showed their ability to rework a track and they turned in two remixes of Aster – Cielo, on John Talabot’s Hivern Discs. On top of the music, Bicep released a limited edition range of Feel My Bicep T-shirts for which the demand outstripped supply leading to them selling out very quickly. As the year drew to a close they embarked on an Australian tour over new year and rose up 4 places to 28 on the Resident Advisor top 100 DJs poll.
In 2014 Bicep continued where they left off with another three track EP released on Aus in May which leant more towards their techno side. They also contributed to Will Saul’s DJ Kicks compilation with their track Nova. This was then followed up with a remix for London based party and label Tief. During this time the Feel My Bicep events grew stronger throughout the year hosting Todd Terje’s London album launch at Oval Space, an FMB event at London’s Corsica Studios and Berlins Panorama Bar; the latter a collaborative event with Frankfurt’s Robert Johnson. Feel My Bicep records had two main releases in 2014, the first (FMB003) being a remix 12” of their previous track Satisfy. Both John Talabot and Brassica turned in brilliant remixes which then led onto the release of FMB004, a 4 track club 12” including Lyk Lyk, the Italo techno hybrid Poly Pineapple and two collaborations with their old blog contributor Hammer called Icebowl and Day 3. Around this time their Essential Mix aired on BBC Radio One and was shortlisted as one of four best essential mixes of 2015. They also had standout sets with their We Love Residency at Space in Ibiza and closing the Yuma tent at Coachella. At the end of 2014 they linked up with another Aus affiliate, Midland and released a club 12” white label called D-Mil which gained plenty of support across the BBC and further afield. In 2015 the relationship with Aus is further developed with a 4 track Just EP in May which was closely followed by the announcement of Bicep becoming the new residents at London club XOYO, playing every Saturday night across the summer from July to September. They programmed guests such as Derrick May, Andrew Weathearll and 30+ more across the 13 week series. Other Feel My Bicep 2015 parties include the first stateside one in March which took place in LA, and an Off Sonar party in Barcelona with Dj Harvey in conjunction with Frankfurt’s Live At Robert Johnson in June.
Back in the studio, FMB005/6 are scheduled for a 2015 release as well as remixes for Brassica’s new album and one for UK Acid House hero’s to be announced soon. US label First Choice are set to be reborn with a Bicep remix of Dionne and the guys have submitted a spattering of one off tracks for various compilations including a track for Modeselektors closing 50 Weapons compilation, and Gerd Janson’s Musik For Autobahns Volume II forthcoming on Rush Hour.
Keep an eye out for a new a T-shirt series and regular updates on the blog and London 22 tracks page.

Headway 11th Birthday with Ben Sims (Theory / Hardgroove / Drumcode / Machine)
It seems like only recently we were talking about our 10th Birthday but here we are again! It gives us great pleasure to announce that for our 11th Birthday we welcome one of the world’s most in-demand and leading techno DJs to Headway for the first time – Ben Sims!
With over 20 years experience under his belt, Ben Sims is a tight, energetic mixer who skilfully weaves together his own distinctive blend of tough funk and hardgrooves, often using three-deck wizardry and plenty of dexterity. A perfect example of this was when we caught him close the Arcadia Afterburner Stage at Rockess in 2012 on the Saturday night with arguably the best set of the weekend! We’re expecting more of the same when Ben makes his Dundee debut!

From early formative days earning his stripes spinning hip hop, house and rave on pirate radio, and at parties around Essex and East London, through the 90’s as an ever more in demand DJ, and on into the new millennium as a label boss, producer and internationally recognised techno legend in his own right, Ben Sims has spent all his conscious life exploring all facets of underground dance music
Throughout that time, the man has honed his reputation as a tight, energetic mixer who skilfully weaves together his own distinctive blend of tough funk and hardgrooves, often using three-deck wizardry and plenty of dexterity. Be it at clubs like Fabric London, Atomic Jam, Berghain, Florida 135, or any number of festivals around the world, Sims’ sets are powerful, memorable, and unique, while constantly pushing the boundaries of a DJ set – utilising a mesmerizing blend of vinyl, CDs, and software.
As well as carving a reputation as one of the world’s leading techno DJs, Ben has curated many of his own revered labels over the years. Chief amongst them is Theory – an imprint this year celebrating it’s 40th release, that counts amongst it’s supporters contemporary connoisseurs like Marcel Dettmann, Ben Klock, and the old guard of Dave Clarke, Robert Hood, Rolando and more – proof, then, that Sims is on the form of his life production wise.
Riding high on the wave of critical acclaim from his cultured debut long player on Drumcode, 2011’s Smoke & Mirrors, an album that voyages into Sim’s unique take on techno, coupled with authentic house outings, thanks to guest appearances from Chicago’s Tyree Cooper and Detroit’s Blake Baxter, whilst also showcasing plenty of dubbed-out and grainy textures.
Sims has put his name to more than 50 releases in the last two decades. During those years, there has also been a steady stream of high profile remixes of scene heavyweights, including Jeff Mills, Adam Beyer, Kevin Saunderson and Chris Liebing, on labels du jour like AXIS, KMS, CLR and Drumcode, all of which have won as much critical praise as they have crossover success.
Despite his veteran status in the scene, Sims has always been keen to evolve. Alongside Kirk Degiorgio, he is co-founder & curator of Machine – a clubnight which focuses on new, unreleased, & upfront music; it’s primary home in London, but with editions all across Europe each year. Ben also hosts Sims & Friends events and stages at top clubs and festivals across Europe. Such shows incorporate Killa Productions sets with long time associate Paul Mac and feature regular appearances from like-minded talents such as Surgeon and others.
Quite simply, if you know techno, you know Ben Sims.

When it comes to house music there’s been something of a renaissance in New York City these past few years, and one of its main advocates is Levon Vincent. Born in Houston, Texas and raised on the East Coast; he now calls Berlin his home. As a club- goer, he cut his teeth during the pre-Giuliani New York heyday, where a vibrant scene was helping to push the elegant sound that would become known as NY house forward – and Levon witnessed it all first-hand. Working his way up through landmarks like Sugar Reef (of Sugar Babies fame) or Pat Field’s Boutique, and record stores such as Kim’s, Tower, and Music Exchange, Levon joined a long, proud lineage of fringe arts based around New York’s downtown culture. Ten years later, in 2001, he began to work at the legendary Halcyon record shop in Brooklyn. Halcyon, which doubled as a cafe?, was more than just a record store – it was a place where music aficionados could sit and exchange ideas while listening to the music they love. With a meaty sound-system and their friendly and open policy, the shop soon became a hub for NY’s most passionate dance enthusiasts. It was here that Levon met his future Deconstruct label partner Anthony Parasole, as well as DJ Jus-Ed; who subsequently went on to start the Underground Quality label – the label that has done so much to introduce their homegrown sounds to a global audience. Even artists from further a-field like Nina Kraviz or Anton Zap have UQ to thank for first promoting them.
By 2008, Levon began his own label, Novel Sound. He started with a bang: a certified hit in the form of the label’s first release, ‘These Games’ EP. It’s a 4-track EP and the release featured a song by Jus-Ed as well. Levon repaid the swap on Ed’s own label, with one of 2009’s biggest tracks, ‘Games Dub’. With his industrial clanging beats, Levon’s dubbed-out sound quickly found him supporters from scene veterans like Craig Richards and Berghain’s Marcel Dettmann. Soon after, Levon was invited to play at fabric, Rex, Berghain, and of course the infamous Underground Quality party series at the now defunct Tape Club. As a producer, his immense focus and concentration come to a head in tracks that have attained anthemic status – the Ostgut Ton release ‘Late Night Jam’, with its driving chord-stabs, sits as comfortably in a percussive UK bass set as it does in any pumping techno set – as demonstrated by Pearson Sound on last year’s massive FABRICLIVE 56. Levon also released his own Fabric 63 mix in 2012 to critical acclaim receiving 4.5 stars out of 5 on Resident Advisor with many of his own releases in the tracklist.
“In the 80s, I had some VCRs, a record player and a dual cassette deck. I had a group of friends at that time and we were really interested in DJing and making beats, we would combine various songs and recordings to make new songs and then combine those to make new mixes; stuff like, recording a spoken word track playing over Mr. Fingers or add movie dialogue to another record. We loved the dirty version of I’ll House You, ‘I’ll Hump You’. I remember us all agreeing on that record. Soul II Soul had a big impact, too. I regularly slip-up and refer to podcasts as “mix tapes”, maybe because it’s nostalgic or something. It still sounds right to me. Mix tapes are one of the very coolest things to come from Generation-X. After hearing or maybe reading about how Nitzer Ebb were doing their music I remember asking my mom to bring me to the Sam Ash store on 48th to get a sampler, not knowing the price of the things! Upwards of $10k! A few years later I did eventually get a used Ensoniq EPS-1, which was a more affordable semi-pro sampler. I think it was a popular piece of equipment, it was certainly a step up from my Casio SK-1… Many producers probably remember using the EPS-1 fondly.”

Robert Hood needs little introduction. Founding member of the legendary group Underground Resistance as a ‘Minister Of Information’ with ‘Mad’ Mike Banks & Jeff Mills, his seminal works on Jeff Mill’s Axis and his very own M-Plant imprint paved the way for a wave of stripped-down dancefloor minimalism that directed much of techno’s path throughout the late Nineties.
Robert Hood makes Detroit techno with an emphasis on soul and experimentation over flash and popularity. Having recorded for Jaun Atkins’ Metroplex, Jeff Mills’ Axis label, as well as Patrick Pulsingers ‘Cheap’ label, Peacefrog, and more recently Music Man, Hood also owns and operates the M-Plant imprint, through which he’s released the bulk of his solo material. He has only released 2 ever CD mixes one for French label Logistic, and a mix for the club ‘Fabric’ mix series.
Last year he changed the game again, dropping his first full length album as Floorplan, (Hood’s alias for house, soul, techno and disco). The phenomenal “Paradise” LP went on to annihilate dance floors from start to finish – “Impeccable… as usual” (Juno), “4/5” (Resident Advisor), “8/10 – completely absorbing” (XLR8R).
Now celebrating 20 years of his label M-Plant, he has always been widely credited with founding minimal techno. For all his rep as the “Godfather of Minimal”, it’s clear he draws his inspiration from soul and funk. With the return of Floorplan he is now delivering “the most enjoyable house sessions in recent memory” (FACT Magazine), counting Ben Klock, Kyle Hall, Jeff Mills and just about every other producer that matters as his friends and fans.
“Robert has always maintained what we’ve always needed in Electronic Music, a simplified and intelligent view of Future Music. He’s built an impressive career almost single-handedly” – Jeff Mills

After a long night of dancing, many night club patrons leave the venue with a certain track stuck in their heads. But for Ame, the DJ/production duo of Kristian Beyer and Frank Wiedemann, the tunes lodged in their brains are the ones they didn’t hear, ones not yet written that would fit perfectly in their sets. Since 2003, Beyer and Wiedemann have penned songs that once existed just outside club- goers’ imagination, songs that boldly combined floor-filling elements with conceptual conceits while maintaining their visceral appeal. As part of Innervisions, the collective/label they run with Dixon, Ame (pronounced “AHM”) offer glimpses of the future of electronic music through their live project, genre-melding compilations, and an independently run shop that completes the connection between artist and admirer. In a genre obsessed with reliving the past, Ame are focused on what’s still to come.
The partnership was formed in their hometown of Karlsruhe where Wiedemann first crossed paths with Beyer in 2001 at the latter’s record shop, Plattentasche. Bonding over Chicago house, Detroit techno and much else besides, the duo joined forces in 2003 to produce seminal deep house platters for Sonar Kollektiv, many of which were collected on the duo’s self-titled debut album. Intent on not repeating themselves, Ame splintered their established sound and found a more nimble, compositional approach that yielded their scene-conquering single, “Rej.” Not content to rest on their laurels as the tune made the rounds on Defected Records and many others, the pair teamed up with Dixon and Henrik Schwarz in 2006 for another instant classic, “Where We At,” featuring Derrick Carter’s stirring vocals. It would’ve been understandable if Beyer and Wiedemann had further pursued the sound which brought them such acclaim, but for Ame the appeal is in breaking down influences and songwriting habits in order to craft something new. Without attachments to particular methods and patterns, the duo was free to develop an overarching view of what dance music could be and pursue it through various moods, timbres and even genres. But if one stylistic point shines through it’s the group’s penchant for orchestral instrumentation and composition, albeit deconstructed and enmeshed in vintage synth tones and spectral vocal samples. From the waltzing proto-techno of “Fiori,” a key movement in Ostgut Ton’s ballet score, Shut Up and Dance! Updated, to the gargantuan brass tearing through the wildpitch strings of “Enoi,” their work simultaneously evokes the conceptual ardor of John Cage or Tony Conrad and the dance floor thrust of DJ Pierre or Underground Resistance.
Ame’s ability to fuse together seemingly disparate influences is greatly informed by their talents as DJs. Not given to fulfilling trends, their sets draw upon the whole of dance music’s history and keep them in great demand around the world. Their regular nights at such establishments as Robert Johnson (Frankfurt), Fabric (London), Trouw (Amsterdam), Lux (Lisbon), and Air (Tokyo) are exceeded only by their marathon sets during Innervisions nights at their beloved Panorama Bar (Berlin). Those awaiting the opportunity to experience an Ame DJ or live set have been well cared for as well, as the pair have captured their curating skills on mix CDs for Sonar Kollektiv, NRK Sound Division and Fabric, as well as the landmark survey of historical minimalism, The Grandfather Paradox compilation done in collaboration with Dixon and Schwarz. Ame are set to follow this achievement with a period-spanning mix all their own, Primary Structures.
As core members of what they refer to as the Innervisions family, the duo are deeply involved in the group’s operations. The imprint is renowned for exacting quality control, releasing only five or six titles a year encased in lavish artwork, many of which are widely tipped. With input from Wiedemann, Beyer and Dixon drive the label’s A&R direction, selecting a few artists – who have included Laurent Garnier, Chateau Flight, Stefan Goldmann and Culoe De Song – to accompany the main cohort of Henrik Schwarz, Tokyo Black Star, and themselves. Fully prepared for the 21st century, Innervisions connects to its fanbase through a thoughtfully stocked web store which sells records, fashionable clothing and books like Tobias Rapp’s Lost And Sound (which they translated into English) and its release subscription service. Ame are also crucial components of A Critical Mass, a live project that finds the pair, alongside Dixon and Schwarz, reworking the creative DNA of each other’s songs in real- time. It’s just one more facet of Ame’s artistry, further evidence of the duo’s position at the forefront of electronic music.
Headway 10th Birthday presents Exit XV Tour with Paul Woolford
It makes us immensely proud to be able to announce Headway’s 10th Birthday! I don’t think any of the 4 of us thought that we would reach such a milestone after our humble beginnings on a Wednesday night at Fat Sams in 2004!
And who better to headline than someone who was instrumental in making Headway what it is now back in 2006 for our first event at what is now our home: The Reading Rooms. He subsequently rocked it for us again in 2007 and 2008.
One of the best DJs we’ve ever had play for us, and very much now a man of the moment again with his massive summer tune last year ‘Untitled’ amongst his recent productions as alias Special Request, the brilliant PAUL WOOLFORD!
This event shall be running as part of the EXIT Festival World Tour, more info to follow…

With forthcoming music being released on Carl Craig’s Planet E, Scuba’s Hotflush Recordings, London’s Phonica label, Paul Woolford keeps reinventing himself and pushing the boundaries, maintaining a hectic global tour schedule playing key clubs globally such as Panorama Bar, Fabric, Warung and D Edge in Brazil, and for the 6th year, the renewal of his key We Love.. Space on
Sundays residency in Ibiza.
Initially inspired by the constant throb of the radio throughout his childhood, the seeds of Paul Woolford’s future direction were sewn by the time a record collecting addiction kicked in properly during his teenage years. This insatiable appetite for musical stimulation has driven him to explore far beyond the cutting-edge house and techno that is his stock-in-trade, and led him down more experimental paths, embracing aspects of improvised jazz through his collaborative work with Paul Hession, and taking huge inspiration from the modern composition of Steve Reich. All this is distilled within the house and techno dynamic that Woolford has made second-nature and you can clearly see these influences emerging across various productions.
Many know Paul Woolford’s name through the 2005/6 slow-burning hit “Erotic Discourse”, released on 2020 Vision, the Leeds label with which he made his name initially. The success of this proved he has the ability to create a genre defining sound and led to sales of over 15,000, capturing the imagination of DJs across the board from Ivan Smagghe to Ricardo Villalobos, The Chemical
Brothers, Richie Hawtin and DJ Hell to Francois Kevorkian, Laurent Garnier, Trevor Jackson to Erol Alkan. Indeed Erol Alkan described the track as “a modern day psyche record” and the track became a stone-cold classic.
He has since appeared across international media including the cover of DJ Mag and IDJ including a photo shoot from Tate Modern’s Doris Salcedo installation “Shibboleth” (after a personal email from Woolford, Salcedo gave her express permission).
